Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
Good day to you sir. I am writing this letter to complain about the insufficient parking space avaliable at the apartment building compound.
In recent times, when i arrive home late from work, I no longer get a parking space for my car. I am left with no choice than to park at the side of the road. This is because the parking space has been occupied by residents and non residents of the apartment.
Parking along the road is not ideal as theft is rampant in the neighbouhood. Several residents of the apartment have similar complaints. This has led to disagreements among the apartment occupants.
I will suggest the creation of a bigger parking space, outside the apartment compound. This new parking space will be barricated with a gate and walls. There will also be the presence of a security personnel. This to provide security to the parking space.
I will be greatly pleased if this issue could be resolved in due time.
Yours faithfully,
Osahon Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly describe the situation regarding the insufficient parking space, explain why it bothers you (mentioning rampant theft and community disagreements), and suggest a practical solution involving an expanded, secured parking area outside the compound. Your purpose is immediately clear, and the tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a landlord. All parts of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant ideas, demonstrating a clear understanding of General Training Task 1 requirements. Therefore, this meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct function from introduction to conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices adequately to connect your ideas, such as 'This is because' and 'Parking along the road is not ideal'. However, paragraphing and referencing could be slightly more sophisticated to achieve a higher band. For instance, the transition between paragraphs could flow more naturally, and sentence structures sometimes rely on repetitive transitional patterns. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'insufficient parking space', 'rampant', and 'disagreements'. However, there are some minor spelling and lexical inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'avaliable' instead of 'available', using a lowercase 'i' for the pronoun 'I' in the second paragraph, and writing 'non residents' instead of the hyphenated 'non-residents'. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, these slips prevent the response from reaching Band 7.0. The vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, making Band 6.5 the most appropriate score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as 'In recent times, when i arrive home late from work, I no longer get a parking space for my car.' Grammatical control is generally good, but there are a few noticeable errors, including punctuation issues, missing articles, and sentence fragments like 'This to provide security to the parking space.' Furthermore, the capitalisation of pronouns is inconsistent ('i' instead of 'I'). These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to understand your points easily. This balanced profile corresponds to a Band 6.0.
