IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Landlord,

I am writing to bring your attention to the problem of parking space.

As you know,I am working in a Long Term Care, that is around 20 minutes far from our house. I work mornings so I am back around 3 pm, but I never find a space for parking in back lot. So I have to park either on street or couples of blocks away from home which is very inconvenient.

The situation is frustating as I pay rent regularly and expect all the facilities. But it adds to my stress when I am not getting reasonable parking and it's hard to walk a long distance with groceries and in poor weather. It's very time consuming and stressful.

I humbly request you to please solve my problem of car parking

Thank you.

With regards,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task prompt. You described the parking situation clearly by explaining your arrival time and lack of spaces, explained why this is frustrating and inconvenient, and suggested a solution to your landlord. However, there is a penalty to consider regarding the length requirement: the response contains 138 words, which falls short of the minimum 150-word requirement specified in the instructions. Because this length requirement was not met, it negatively impacts the overall Task Achievement score. If the word count had met the minimum, the score would be higher due to the clear coverage of all required points. Therefore, a band 5.0 is awarded for partially fulfilling the length constraint while still addressing the content effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical structure appropriate for formal correspondence. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: introducing the problem, elaborating on the consequences, and making a polite request. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'As you know,' 'So,' and 'But,' though some transitions are slightly repetitive or informal (e.g., starting consecutive sentences with 'The situation is frustrating' and 'But it adds'). Paragraphing is generally handled well, separating the introduction, body details, and conclusion distinctly. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive, which places this response comfortably in the band 6 category for managing organisation and cohesion reasonably well despite minor mechanical elements.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempted some less common phrases such as 'Long Term Care,' 'inconvenient,' 'frustrating,' and 'time consuming.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'frustating' (frustrating) and 'couples of blocks' (a couple of blocks), alongside missing articles ('on street' instead of 'on the street'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, reflecting a band 6 level where the language used is sufficient to communicate the main points, but includes errors that prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your response, such as 'As you know, I am working in a Long Term Care, that is around 20 minutes far from our house.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes throughout the text, including a comma splice after 'As you know,I', missing articles ('working in a Long Term Care'), and prepositions ('20 minutes far from' instead of '20 minutes away from'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning of your letter remains entirely clear to the reader. This performance aligns well with the band 6 descriptors for displaying a mix of structures alongside some recurring grammatical errors.
