Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kamal,
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the parking space that you provided for an extra charge with the apartment, as it is frequently not available upon my return from work in the evening.
I am living on the upper floor of your rented building. I chose this place because you provided the parking facility, and I really needed the space as I have bought a new car and I cannot park it anywhere, due to the increasing robbery and theft crimes.
It creates an unpleasant situation for me, because every evening after coming home, parking space is not vacant and I have to find safe place which consumes so much of my time, and it often ends in a family conflict as I always reach late at home. Moreover, I have to pay additional charges for parking on road, so that I would not get ticket from traffic police which causes me inconvenience and disrupts my budget.
I want you to put a board with instructions on the parking lot, where clearly mentions that parking space is not available for guests and it will impose fine or ticket if someone do so.
I will look forward for your prompt reply with a valid solution.
Warm regards,
Roop.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation in the opening paragraph and explain why it bothers you by highlighting the time wasted searching for alternative spots and the tension caused at home. Furthermore, you suggest a practical solution for the landlord, which is to put up a warning sign for guests and impose fines. Your tone is appropriately formal for a landlord-tenant correspondence. All parts of the task are well-developed and addressed logically, meeting the expectations for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression from describing the problem to detailing its effects and proposing a solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the housing context, the negative impacts, and the requested remedy. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, with transition words like 'Moreover' helping to link your supporting arguments. While referencing and paragraph transitions are mostly clear and effective, the overall structure remains straightforward rather than fully flexible, which aligns well with a Band 7.0 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with appropriate precision, utilizing terms such as 'disappointment', 'frequently not available', and 'additional charges'. You make attempts at less common lexical items, including 'increasing robbery and theft crimes' and 'disrupts my budget'. However, there are occasional awkward collocations and minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as writing 'parking space is not vacant' instead of 'vacant parking spaces' and 'reach late at home' instead of 'arrive home late'. These errors do not impede communication, placing your vocabulary use firmly in the Band 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your letter features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing an attempt at varied grammatical forms. You manage subordinate clauses reasonably well, as seen in sentences like 'I chose this place because you provided the parking facility.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings scattered throughout the text, including 'where clearly mentions' (missing subject/passive voice issue), 'if someone do so' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'I will look forward for your prompt reply' (incorrect preposition usage). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, though they rarely impede overall communication, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.
