Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mrs. Johnson,
I am writing this letter to bring your attention on a persistent issue regarding the parking situation at our apartment building on Gandhi street.
Over the past few months, the parking lot in the back has become increasingly overcrowded. I regularly arrive home from work around 6:30 PM only to find every single parking space occupied on multiple occasions, I have noticed unfamiliar vehicles were parked there, which strongly suggests that non-residents or guests are using our designated facilities.
This situation causes me considerable frustration and inconvenience. After working long shifts, I am forced to spend upwards of twenty minutes driving around the neighbourhood to secure off-street parking. Furthermore, leaving my car blocks away raises safety concern for both myself walking home late at night and the security of my vehicle
To resolve this matter, I would highly recommend implementing a permit - only parking system. Issuing official parking stickers to residents & installing clear "Permit Parking only - Violators will be Towed" sign would immediately deter unauthorized vehicles. Alternatively, assigning so numbered spaces to each apartment unit would guarantee everyone a spot.
Thank you for your time and prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on how we can address this.
Yours faithfully
Surpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation in your apartment building, explain the negative impacts such as wasted time and safety concerns, and offer practical solutions like a permit-only system or assigned spaces. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, maintaining a polite yet firm register throughout. All ideas are fully developed and relevant, fulfilling the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas from describing the problem to explaining its effects and proposing solutions. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'To resolve this matter', and 'Alternatively' are used naturally and accurately to guide the reader through your arguments without any mechanical feel.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible vocabulary range suited to a formal complaint or request letter. Items such as 'persistent issue', 'increasingly overcrowded', 'considerable frustration', and 'unauthorized vehicles' show good control of collocation and style. There is only a minor preposition collocation slip with 'bring your attention on' instead of 'bring your attention to', but this does not impede communication at all.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of complex and simple sentence structures, demonstrating high accuracy. Structures such as 'I regularly arrive home from work around 6:30 PM only to find...' and 'leaving my car blocks away raises safety concern' show good control. There is a minor comma splice in the second paragraph ('occupied on multiple occasions, I have noticed') and a missing plural in 'safety concern', but the majority of sentences are error-free and punctuation is generally well managed.
