Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I'm writing this letter to address the issue with parking space in the parking lot of the building. I want to inform you that there is not enough parking space in the parking lot due to unauthorised parking by non-residential people.
It has became a regular problem cause as I came home late from work, and its is really hard to find parking space in evening. I live in small apartment, and I regularly go out to do laundry, becuase i have to park my car far away, it is very exhausting. I have seen other residents facing the same problem as well.
I would like suggest that there should be prorper signs to reserve parking for the building residents. I would also recommend to issue parking passes to the building residents, and unauthorised parked cars should be fined.
I hope you will take this issue seriously and take appropirate actions.
Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You successfully describe the situation regarding the lack of parking space caused by unauthorised vehicles. You explain clearly why this bothers you by highlighting the frustration of coming home late and the added exhaustion of having to park far away while managing daily chores like laundry. Furthermore, you suggest practical solutions for the landlord, including putting up proper signs, issuing parking passes, and fining rule-breakers. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, maintaining politeness while clearly stating the problem. All parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear overall organisation and logical progression from describing the problem to explaining its impact and finally offering solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct purpose (introduction, impact, suggestions, and conclusion). Cohesive devices are used adequately, though some connections feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the transition into the second paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking sentences would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure meets the criteria for Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with clear attempts to use less common items and topic-specific phrases such as 'unauthorised parking', 'residents', and 'parking passes'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'became' instead of 'becomes', 'cause' instead of 'because', and 'appropirate' instead of 'appropriate'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect limitations in precision and control. The lexical range is sufficient to convey your message effectively, aligning with a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I want to inform you that there is not enough parking space...' and 'I would like suggest that there should be proper signs...'. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, including tense issues ('It has became a regular problem cause as I came home late'), punctuation errors ('its is really hard', 'apartment, and'), and missing prepositions or modal particles (e.g., 'would like suggest' should be 'would like to suggest'). These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, but communication is not impeded, placing your grammar at a Band 6.0.
