You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Landloard,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am formally writing this letter to express my concerns about limited availability of parking area. I would also suggest an alternative to this issue.

To begin with, I have been living in your apartment since last two years.Luckily, I have never been a cause of disturbance to anyone.

Anyhow, due to increased number of vehicles in this community, I am unable to find an appropriate parking space particularly in the evening when I come back from my work. Backyard parking is usually completely packed. Unfortunately, I cannot find anyother place at that time.

I would request you to provide me with another parking spot in the local garage adjacent to the church. It will be a better option to get a place for my car without disturbing anyone else.

To conclude, I would appreciate if you consider my suggestion and take an immediate action on that. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Madiha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You described the situation clearly by stating that you live in the apartment and cannot find an empty parking space in the backyard due to an increased number of vehicles. You explained why this bothers you, noting that you return late from work and are unable to find any other place, causing distress. Furthermore, you suggested a practical solution by asking the landlord to provide a spot in the local garage adjacent to the church. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout. The response fully satisfies the task requirements and is well-developed from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making it easy for the reader to follow. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate your greetings, the description of the problem, your suggestion, and your closing remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Anyhow', and 'To conclude' are employed to structure the response, although 'Anyhow' is slightly informal for a formal letter. Nevertheless, referencing and paragraphing are managed sufficiently well to ensure a clear logical progression throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary for this task, successfully conveying your meaning. Phrases such as 'formally writing', 'limited availability', and 'adjacent to the church' show a good attempt at formal register. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'since last two years' instead of 'for the past two years' and 'take an immediate action' instead of 'take immediate action'. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message without causing any misunderstanding for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would request you to provide me with another parking spot in the local garage adjacent to the church.' Control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, and many sentences are error-free. There are, however, some minor errors, including a spelling mistake in the salutation ('Landloard' instead of 'Landlord') and a missing article in 'due to increased number of vehicles' (should be 'due to an increased number'). Another minor error is 'find anyother place', which should be written as two words ('any other'). These errors do not impede communication.
