Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Landlord,
I am writing to express my concern with regard to the parking lot and its space availability for my vehicle to park after my work.
As you know we have a small parking lot since last year after the renovation. I have been facing issues every day after that. Whenever I tried to park my car in the parking lot , I had no space left there, especially after my working hours.
It is very sad ,and I always get frustrated with the situation. Almost every day , I have my work from 6 a.m untill 4p.m. How does it feels seeing unavailability of parking space after a tiring working hours.
I really request you to solve this ongoing issue at the earliest. Would it be possible for you to find a proper solution? It would be beneficial if one apartment could use one parking lot rather than using 3 or 4 at the same time.
I look forward to seeing a positive response from you. I appreciate all the time and effort you will take to resolve this issue.
Yours sincerely,
KEE KUU.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, the situation is clearly described in sentences like 'Whenever I tried to park my car in the parking lot , I had no space left there'. Second, the emotional impact and frustration are explained, as seen in 'It is very sad ,and I always get frustrated with the situation.' Finally, a practical suggestion is offered to solve the problem, stating that 'it would be beneficial if one apartment could use one parking lot rather than using 3 or 4 at the same time.' The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a landlord, and the ideas are extended and supported adequately, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making progression easy to follow. Paragraphing is appropriately used to separate the greeting, the description, the explanation, the suggestion, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Whenever', 'especially', and 'Therefore' (implied through sequencing), though some referencing is slightly clunky, for instance, 'after that' referring back to the renovation. Overall, the structural arrangement is coherent and meets the descriptors for Band 6.5, providing a clear flow of information from one point to the next without causing confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate general terms like 'parking lot', 'space availability', and 'renovation'. The candidate attempts some less common phrases, such as 'ongoing issue' and 'beneficial', but also makes noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'after my work' instead of 'after work', and 'tiring working hours' instead of 'tiring day at work'. Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing prevents the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The range is sufficient for communication, corresponding to a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional-style structures ('Would it be possible for you to...') and subordinate clauses ('Whenever I tried to park...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as missing articles ('seeing unavailability of parking space'), awkward phrasing in questions ('How does it feels seeing...'), and incorrect spacing before commas. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band. The grammar reflects a stable Band 6.0 level.
