Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you regarding the parking issue I am facing right now at your apartment building.

Nowadays, it is very difficult to find a parking slot in the parking lot of residential complex. There are some tenants from our neighbourhood are also parking their cars in our building's parking area. Due to this reason we are unable to park our cars and paying a significant amount of money to park our cars at a private parking lot.

It takes a lot of time to travel to this private parking and I always get late for mt office due to this reason. This situation is not only affecting me financially but also affecting my reputation at work. My boss has already gave me multiple warnings and he said next time he will not going to tolerate my late comings.

I would like to suggest a solution that can help to resolve this problem. I want you to send a legal notice to neighbourhood residents to park their cars in their building's parking space. Moreover, also install a electronic barrier that will allow only true residents to enter the parking area by scanning their identity cards.

I extent my sincere appreciation for your consideration, and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the parking situation in the apartment building is clearly described, noting the lack of empty slots due to outside vehicles. Second, the impact is explained well, detailing both the financial burden of paying for private parking and the professional consequences of arriving late to work. Third, practical and relevant solutions are provided, specifically suggesting a legal notice and the installation of an electronic barrier. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is sustained throughout. The requirements of the task have been fully and effectively met, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the description of the problem, the personal impact, and the suggested solutions. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, such as 'Due to this reason', 'Moreover', and 'This situation'. However, some cohesive transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of 'due to this reason'. Referencing is mostly clear, though paragraph transitions could flow more smoothly. Overall, the text demonstrates a clear progression of ideas that satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7, comfortably landing at a solid 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases such as 'significant amount of money', 'affecting my reputation at work', and 'earliest convenience' show a good grasp of functional language appropriate for a formal complaint. However, there are some minor lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'neighbourhood residents' instead of 'neighbouring residents' or 'outsiders', and 'true residents' instead of 'legitimate residents' or 'tenants'. Additionally, there is a minor typo with 'mt office' instead of 'my office'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message clearly, matching the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or causal clauses such as 'This situation is not only affecting me financially but also affecting my reputation at work.' There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'There are some tenants from our neighbourhood are also parking' contains a double verb structure error, 'he said next time he will not going to tolerate' contains tense and grammatical inaccuracies, and 'I extent my sincere appreciation' features a misspelling of 'extend'. While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.
