Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because i have faced an issue regarding the car parking in my apartment building.
I am your tenant for the past few months. However, I have faced this issue many times but somehow managed. Now this problem is getting worse over time, it happened frequently, when i was not able to find any space for my car to be parked.
I bear it to the extent i can, but now it is beyond my limit. The reason is that recently i was fined due to improper parking. Moreover, my car was damaged by some street traffic. Our neibourhood is also unhappy due to lack of space because of parking in front of house.
I request you to look in to this matter as soon as possible.
I am waiting for your response. Kindly let me know when you have a plan to come.
Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The writer successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the situation is clearly described in the opening paragraphs, noting the difficulty of finding a parking space in the building's lot after coming home from work. Second, the writer explains why this is bothersome by detailing personal consequences, such as receiving a fine for improper parking, car damage from street traffic, and neighbor complaints. Finally, a clear suggestion is made asking the landlord to visit and discuss a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and all parts of the task are adequately addressed. Therefore, the response achieves a solid Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 for fully covering the requirements despite minor structural shifts in the paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. The purpose of the letter is stated right away, and the logical progression moves naturally from describing the problem to explaining its effects and finally requesting action. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with several very short paragraphs that could be better combined or organized for smoother flow. Cohesive devices are basic but functional, such as 'However', 'Now', and 'Moreover'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions slightly affect the natural progression of ideas. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are attempts to use less common expressions, such as 'beyond my limit' and 'improper parking'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'car parking' instead of 'parking space' or 'parking facilities', and 'neibourhood' contains a spelling error. While these minor errors and limitations do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The range is sufficient for the prompt requirements, making a Band 6 score appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter because i have faced an issue...' and 'The reason is that recently i was fined...'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, notably the lack of capitalization for the pronoun 'i', a comma splice ('managed. Now'), and a missing preposition in 'look in to this matter' (should be 'look into'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
