Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith

Hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention regarding the parking issue.

As we have discussed earlier and it mentioned in the lease agreement that one parking spot is dedicated to me. I am not sure who but someone parks his/her car in my parking spot. Everyday I work till late and comes home after midnight and I have to park my car on the streets, which is not a safe option as well. Even few weeks back there were cases of cars theft from the neighborhood. Moreover, last week I got a parking ticket worth of 80$ from the city as my car was parked on the street. I am not demanding for any compensation, I am just worried about my car. This situation causes me so much trouble.

I would really appreciate if you can help me with the situation. Can you please find out who parks their car in my parking spot? And please inform them to park their car somewhere else.

Please resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you so much for understanding my issue.

Kind regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in your letter to the landlord. You described the situation clearly by mentioning that someone is parking in your dedicated spot. You explained why it bothers you by detailing the safety concerns regarding street parking after midnight, as well as the financial burden of receiving an 80-dollar parking ticket. Finally, you offered clear suggestions for solving the issue, asking the landlord to identify the unauthorized vehicle and instruct the owner to park elsewhere. The tone is appropriate for a formal tenant-landlord communication, and your position is consistent throughout the letter. This meets all requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall progression. You started with an appropriate greeting and a clear opening statement of purpose. Paragraphs are used to separate the description and the requested actions, which helps maintain a logical flow. However, paragraphing could be slightly better managed, as your main body block contains multiple ideas grouped together that might have benefited from clearer subdivision. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As we have discussed earlier', though transitions could occasionally be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow your argument without difficulty, aligning well with the Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You utilized an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for this transactional letter task, including terms like 'lease agreement', 'compensation', and 'unauthorized'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'draw your attention regarding' instead of 'draw your attention to', and 'cars theft' instead of 'car theft'. Furthermore, phrases like 'comes home after midnight' contain minor agreement slips. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the text, placing your performance securely at the Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your letter shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As we have discussed earlier and it mentioned in the lease agreement that one parking spot is dedicated to me.' However, this particular sentence contains a structural slip ('it mentioned' instead of 'it was mentioned'). You also made a tense and agreement error in 'Everyday I work till late and comes home after midnight'. While there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the response, they rarely impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear to the reader. This performance fits the Band 6.0 descriptors.
