Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention to a parking issue.

As we discussed earlier, it is mentioned in the lease agreement that one parking spot is dedicated to me. I am not sure who but someone parks their car in my parking spot. Every day, I work untill late and come home after midnight and I have to park my car on the streets, which is not a safe option as well. Even a few weeks ago there were cases of car theft from the neighborhood. Moreover, last week I got a parking ticket worth $80 from the city as my car was parked on the street. I am not demanding any compensation; I am just worried about my car. This situation causes me so much trouble.

I would really appreciate it if you could help me with the situation. Can you please find out who parks their car in my parking spot? And please inform them to park their car somewhere else.

Please resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you so much for understanding my issue.

Kind regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You described the situation clearly by stating that someone else is parking in your designated spot and that you are forced to park on the street. You explained why it bothers you by highlighting safety concerns regarding neighborhood car thefts and the financial burden of an $80 parking ticket. Finally, you suggested a practical solution for the landlord: finding out who is parking in your spot and instructing them to park elsewhere. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to a landlord. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and all parts of the task are well-developed, matching the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. It opens with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, moves into the details of the problem and its consequences, and concludes with a clear request for action followed by a standard sign-off. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Moreover' and 'As we discussed earlier,' though paragraphing could be slightly more varied. Each paragraph has a clear central focus, moving from the introduction to the problem, the consequences, and finally the solution. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall smooth reading experience that aligns well with a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task, successfully conveying your message without any misunderstanding. You make use of some less common functional phrases and vocabulary such as 'lease agreement,' 'compensation,' and 'draw your attention.' There are minor awkward phrasings like 'work untill late' (spelling typo on 'until') and 'options as well,' but these do not impede communication. While the lexical range is sufficient to allow some flexibility and precision, it lacks the broader flexibility and more sophisticated idiomatic control expected at Band 8.0, making Band 6.5 or 7.0 appropriate. Given the successful communication of all details, a Band 7.0 is well-earned.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses like 'I would really appreciate it if you could help me' and 'someone parks their car in my parking spot.' Grammatical control is generally good with frequent error-free sentences. There is one minor spelling error ('untill' instead of 'until'), but punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well throughout. The structures used are appropriate for conveying complex thoughts regarding safety and financial consequences, supporting a solid Band 7.0 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
