Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to you to express my dissatisfaction with the building's parking space. The appartment serves every possible requirement effectively. However, rising issue of space unavailability to park the vehicle, results in disturbing smooth living.
In the evening, when I come back home and try to park my car in parking area, It gets difficult to find available space for parking as the area gets almost full with vehicles.
This problem is affecting me and my other friends because we are paying the rent equally as everyone else and on time so we too deserve the place to park our cars. Moreover, our vehicles are getting affected by the weather such as rain, fog, etcetera.
It would be really appreciated if you can increase the parking area or provide different location to park our vehicles.
I look forward to getting a positive and prompt respose to this letter from your side.
Yours sincerely,
Richa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a General Training letter. The situation is clearly described, explaining that finding an empty parking space after coming home from work is difficult because the lot is full. The explanation of why it bothers the writer is also clearly presented, noting that tenants pay equal rent and deserve a place to park, and that vehicles are vulnerable to bad weather like rain and fog. Furthermore, practical suggestions are provided, asking the landlord to increase the parking area or find an alternative location. However, some ideas show features of the next band as they are slightly less developed than others, particularly the brief mention of other friends facing the same issue without further elaboration. Overall, the content is relevant, well-organised, and fully appropriate for the requested task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression throughout. The response begins with an appropriate greeting, moves through the description, problems, and suggestions, and concludes with a standard sign-off. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as separating the description of the problem from the effects on tenants and the weather concerns. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'In the evening', and 'Moreover', though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. For instance, the transition between discussing rent and weather could be smoother. Nevertheless, the organisation allows the reader to follow the writer's argument easily, and the letter clearly meets the standards of this level while showing glimpses of more flexible organization.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points with a mix of everyday language and some less common lexical items such as 'dissatisfaction', 'unavailability', and 'prompt response'. The writer attempts to use a varied vocabulary, but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'rising issue of space unavailability to park the vehicle, results in disturbing smooth living' contains awkward phrasing and collocation. Additionally, there are minor errors such as spelling 'appartment' with a double 'p' and 'respose' missing a 'n'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in precision and lexical control characteristic of this level, while still demonstrating an adequate range for standard communicative needs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'In the evening, when I come back home and try to park my car in parking area, It gets difficult...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('in parking area' instead of 'in the parking area'), capitalization issues ('It gets difficult'), and preposition usage. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. The sentence structures show variety, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain minor slips. This balance of mixed sentence structures alongside occasional non-systematic errors places the grammatical control securely in this band.
