Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Simon,

I am writing to complain to you regarding the building parking; I cannot find a space. Firstly, I would like to describe the situation. There are a lot of cars parked in our apartment buidling which are not supposed to be parked there. Moreover, as you know, I am a working whenever at night i get back home i couldn't find a space to park my car. It bothers me a lot because I also live in this building. Every night I have to park my car on the road, and now the weather has changed a lot; outside is so chilling waether.

I would like to suggest that you try to mark the parking spaces according to the apartment numbers or which cars are not belongs to our builiding parking give them warning notice they could arrange for themselves that will be very easy to understand, and everyone can get a space for parking.

I look forward to your positive response.

Best Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task. You adequately describe the situation by pointing out unauthorized cars in the parking lot, explain why it bothers you because you are a resident forced to park on the road in the cold weather, and suggest practical solutions such as marking spaces by apartment numbers or issuing warning notices. However, some ideas show the characteristics of this level, remaining slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the suggestion about unauthorized cars and warning notices runs together into a long, slightly confusing clause. To reach the next level, you need to develop and clarify each bullet point with more distinct, expanded detail and a fully maintained tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and appropriate opening and sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices and logical transitions such as 'Firstly' and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, the organization shows mechanical features of cohesion, particularly in the second paragraph where multiple ideas and suggestions are packed into a single, run-on sentence without proper logical separation. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'which cars are not belongs to our builiding parking give them warning notice they could arrange for themselves'. To improve, you need to ensure smoother progression, clearer referencing, and better-managed paragraphing or sentence splitting to avoid mechanical transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic message with words like 'complain', 'parking spaces', and 'response'. However, the lexical range is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'buidling' instead of building, 'chilling waether' instead of chilly weather, and 'not belongs' instead of do not belong. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect a restricted vocabulary control and spelling lapses typical of this band level. To move higher, you should expand your range of less common lexical items, ensure correct word forms, and demonstrate greater precision in collocations and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to complain to you regarding the building parking' and 'Every night I have to park my car on the road'. There are several errors in grammar, punctuation, and clause structure throughout the text, including run-on sentences like 'whenever at night i get back home i couldn't find a space to park my car' and tense or agreement slips. These errors occur regularly, but they rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy, improve punctuation control, and eliminate run-on sentences to produce more frequent error-free clauses.
