Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mike,
Hope you are doing well.
The reason I am writing this letter to you is to bring into your notice that whenever I come back home from work, offently I get any empty parking space, so it is difficult for me to park the car, and I always end parking in the street.
I am fine parking the car in the street, but the problem is I never get any space near to home and have to keep searching for space for 30 mins or sometimes may be 1 hour.
I request to talk to the community management and have a dedicated parking space for the respected apartment, so that nobody can park in the dedicated parking space, and landloard/tenet will always get a space to park their car. Let me know if any help is needed from end, I can also go to the management and speak with them about the issue.
Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt by describing the parking shortage behind your apartment building, explaining why the lack of spaces and long search times bother you, and offering a practical solution involving community management. Your tone is appropriately polite for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. However, your ideas are somewhat mixed in their level of development. While the description of the problem and your proposed solution are clear, the explanation of why it bothers you could be extended further to discuss the specific daily inconvenience or stress it causes. To move towards a higher band, you would need to fully develop all parts of the task with extended support, ensuring that every bullet point receives equal depth of explanation and clear relevance throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable opening greeting, body paragraphs, and a closing sign-off. You attempt to guide the reader through your points using basic cohesive devices such as 'whenever', 'so', and 'but'. However, the progression between ideas feels slightly mechanical in places, and some sentences run together without adequate linking or punctuation, which affects the overall flow. Furthermore, your paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the natural progression of the text. To achieve a higher band, you need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that your sentences and paragraphs are logically sequenced to create a smoother, more transparent progression throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using everyday terms related to housing and vehicles such as 'apartment building', 'parking lot', 'community management', and 'dedicated parking space'. You also attempt some less common vocabulary items. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and spelling that prevent a higher score, such as 'offently' instead of 'often', 'end parking' instead of 'end up parking', 'respected apartment' instead of 'respective apartment', and 'landloard/tenet' instead of 'landlord/tenant'. To reach the next level, you must use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with greater accuracy in word choice, spelling, and collocation so that minor slips do not occur.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'whenever I come back home from work, offently I get any empty parking space' and 'so that nobody can park in the dedicated parking space'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'I get any empty parking space' where a negative construction is needed, missing articles like 'space near to home', and minor preposition errors. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, you need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of complex structures with tighter control over articles, prepositions, and basic clause agreement.
