Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing this letter to formally request you to take a action about a parking problem.

Despite having a lot of parking area behind the building, I face problem regarding parking space when I return home from work. Due to this, I have to park far away from an apartment, even sometimes I have to spend long hours looking for a space which bothers me incredibly. Therefore, it becomes difficult for me to reach at home late at night.

I would like to suggest you that you should give parking permits toi residents. Also, you could be either rented a parking area nearby or expanded it if possible. It would be appreciable if the management could introduce fair parking schedule.

Looking forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the parking situation, explaining why it is troublesome, and suggesting solutions such as parking permits and renting a nearby area. However, some ideas are under-developed or expressed with a lack of clarity, such as the suggestion about expanding the area or introducing a fair schedule without specific details. Additionally, the length requirement is not met, as the response is eighteen words short of the one-hundred-and-fifty-word minimum, which restricts full development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and appropriate opening and closing salutations. Paragraphing is used to separate the greeting, body points, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Despite having', 'Due to this', and 'Therefore' are employed to link ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, meeting the baseline for this band while showing partial elements of a more fluid logical organization.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common expressions like 'formally request', 'parking permits', and 'management'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'take a action' instead of 'take action', 'an apartment' instead of 'my apartment', and 'toi' instead of 'to'. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of concessive clauses with 'Despite having'. There are several grammatical errors regarding prepositions, articles, and verb patterns, including 'reach at home' instead of 'reach home', 'you should give parking permits toi residents', and 'you could be either rented' instead of 'you could either rent'. These errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable, but they rarely impede overall communication.
