Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope my letter finds you doing well.I am writing with regard to the apartment i am currently living in which comes with a parking space at the back but whenever i come back from work i hardly find space.

While renting the apartment, i mentioned about my need for a parking lot since i recently got a car because i have to commute to work everyday. And i paid extra $50 for availing this utility. However, when i come back from my office hours around 7 i have to spend ample time looking for space since its always full and pre occupied and it leads to wastage of time since i have to wait for atleast 30 minutes before anybody leaves and empties the space.

Moreover, it is causing alot of inconvenience to me.I look forward to receiving help from you either by reserving my spot or refunding my utility fees for the past two months. Also, parking space should be made available only for residents and not visitors.I await your prompt service.

Yours Faithfully,

Drishti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence task. The student clearly describes the situation regarding the parking lot, explains why it causes issues such as wasted time and inconvenience, and provides practical suggestions including reserving a spot, issuing a refund, or restricting access to residents only. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. While the ideas are relevant and supported, some aspects could have been slightly more extended to reach the highest bands, showing a tendency to present ideas directly without fully elaborating on the broader impact. Overall, the communication of purpose is clear and the bullet points are fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving logically from the initial description of the problem to the personal impact and finally to actionable solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the initial context in the first paragraph, the specific inconveniences in the second, and the demands in the final paragraph. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of transition words like 'and', 'also', and 'moreover'. Referencing is mostly clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to demonstrate more sophisticated cohesive devices, which keeps the text at a solid mid-level performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the intended message to the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'commute', 'availing', and 'inconvenience', though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'office hours' instead of 'work' or 'leaving the office'. Spelling and word-form errors are minimal and do not impede communication, with minor slips like lowercase letters at the start of sentences ('i' instead of 'I'). To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical items with fewer minor slips in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as in 'whenever i come back from work i hardly find space'. However, there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar control, notably missing capitalization for the pronoun 'I' and at the beginning of sentences ('I am', 'While renting', 'Moreover'), as well as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they represent a recurring pattern of mechanical inaccuracies that prevent the text from reaching a higher grammatical band.
