Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by describing the situation regarding the parking space and the lack of light, explaining why this bothers the writer due to potential damage to the car, and suggesting that the landlord contact the building manager and electrician. However, some ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the explanation of the problem and its impact is somewhat repetitive and lacks deeper extension. The position is generally clear, but the overall treatment of the bullet points is somewhat basic, placing the response firmly at this level. To reach higher bands, the writer would need to fully develop all parts of the prompt with richer details and clearer justifications.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter exhibits some organisation, opening with a salutation and attempting to sequence thoughts from the description of the problem to the proposed solutions and closing. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are either inadequate or awkwardly used, such as repetitive sentence openings like 'I want to informe you that' and sudden shifts between ideas without smooth linking words. Paragraphing is not used effectively, as the entire body of the letter is clumped together with improper spacing. To improve, the writer needs to group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and employ a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive devices to guide the reader logically through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. The writer relies on very basic words and experiences noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'informe' instead of inform, 'flate' instead of flat, 'sufficiant', 'electricien', and 'session' instead of season. These errors and restricted lexical choices mean that less common vocabulary is attempted with frequent inaccuracy, occasionally causing some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to build a broader range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and use more precise terms relevant to housing and parking issues, such as 'tenant', 'adequate', and 'maintenance'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include incorrect capitalization and punctuation in the salutation ('Dear mr.sharma'), tense inconsistencies, missing articles ('in my parking space have no light'), and preposition errors ('park my car on outside the building'). Furthermore, subject-verb agreement and word order errors are evident, such as 'I am mukesh paliwal is your tenant'. To progress, the student must work on mastering basic sentence structures, improving punctuation, and reducing the frequency of foundational grammatical mistakes.
