Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Robert,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing to bring to your attention the problem i am facing with the parking arrangement in my apartment building. although my apartment comes with the designated parking spot but it is mostly occupied when i return home from work.

The problem has been occurring from the past week. My upstairs neighbor has a guest living with him and his friend are frequently visiting the building and are using my parking space. As a result, I have to park my car on the street, which is inconvenient for me when I return for a long day shift from work.

This situation is becoming very frustrating and tiring for me because I expect to have access to my designated parking space at all times. Finding an alternative parking space is very difficult as sometimes I have to park far for the building. I am concerned about this becoming it a regular issue if nothing is done to prevent guest from using residential parking space.

I would appreciate that you could introduce a clear parking policy. For instance, the guest could use the designated parking space for a limited period of time. Also, the residential parking space should not be used and kept vacant for residents at all times. The parking policy should be displayed on the building notice board so that guest and all residents are aware of it.

I hope you take this issue seriously and try to resolve it as soon as possible. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Prabhnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requested points clearly: you explain that the neighbour’s visitors use your allocated space, describe the inconvenience of parking on the street after work, and propose a parking policy with signage. The reason this is bothersome is also made personal and specific, particularly when you mention returning after a long shift and having to park far from the building. Your request to the landlord is polite and appropriate for the situation. The proposed policy is useful, although the suggestion that guests may use the space for a limited period could be clarified—for example, by specifying visitor bays or requiring permission—so it does not conflict with keeping residents’ spaces available. Overall, the purpose and tone are consistently clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression from the parking problem, to its effects, to a proposed solution and closing request. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking phrases such as “As a result,” “For instance,” and “Also” help the reader follow your points. The opening and closing are suitable for a formal letter. Some connections could be made more smoothly: the shift from the neighbour’s guest to “his friend” is slightly unclear, and the two policy suggestions partly overlap. In addition, the repeated references to “parking space” and “parking policy” make parts of the letter feel less flexible. Clearer referencing and a more precise sequence of proposed actions would strengthen the flow further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the complaint, including “designated parking spot,” “inconvenient,” “frustrating,” and “resolve.” These choices communicate the issue and its impact clearly, and phrases such as “bring to your attention” suit the letter’s polite tone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions that limit flexibility and precision: “park far for the building” and “a long day shift from work” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “guest” is repeated where “visitors” could vary the wording. “Parking arrangement” is understandable but broad for a problem involving an allocated space. More accurate collocations and a wider range of natural alternatives would make the vocabulary more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “I am concerned about…” and the conditional phrase “if nothing is done.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the letter. For example, “although my apartment comes with the designated parking spot but” combines two contrasting structures; use either “Although my apartment comes with a designated parking spot, it is…” or “My apartment comes with a designated parking spot, but…”. There are also agreement and article errors in “his friend are” and “the guest could use,” as well as the faulty construction “I would appreciate that you could.” Capitalisation of “I” and sentence punctuation need attention too. Editing these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
