Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Landlord,
My name is Nidhi and i live in unit number 4.I am writing to express my concern regarding the parking problem in our apartment building.Recently i have been struggling to find an empty parking space when i return home from work.
As our parking lot is quite small, it is usually full in the evening. Sometimes, i have to park my car away from the building, which is inconvenient and stressful, especially, after a long day at work.It is also very difficult when the weather is bad or even when i have big bags to carry.
I would appreciate it if you could take some steps to solve the issue. For instance, you could assign one parking space to each apartment and reserve a few spaces for visitors . You could also check whether the parking space is used by the residents or people from outside.
I hope you will consider these suggestions and take some action soon. Thank you for your time and understanding . I look forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Nidhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe the recurring evening parking shortage, explain its effects, and offer practical measures. The details that you sometimes park away from the building and struggle in bad weather or with bags make the inconvenience concrete. Your suggestions—allocating spaces to apartments, reserving visitor spaces, and checking for use by non-residents—are relevant and show a clear purpose throughout. To develop the ideas further, explain briefly how the landlord might implement or communicate the allocation system, or what residents should do if spaces are still unavailable. The request is already clear and appropriately polite; a little more development of the proposed solution would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the problem, describe its consequences, propose solutions, and close with a courteous request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “As our parking lot is quite small” and “For instance” help connect reasons to suggestions. The ideas are easy to follow, with no major gaps in the overall flow. To make cohesion more flexible and polished, vary some of the repeated sentence openings, particularly “I” and “You,” and connect the two proposed actions more explicitly. Also ensure spacing around punctuation is consistent, as in “visitors .” and “understanding .”; these small presentation slips interrupt an otherwise clear letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including appropriate expressions such as “express my concern,” “inconvenient and stressful,” and “reserve a few spaces for visitors.” These choices communicate the problem and your suggestions clearly, and the tone remains suitably polite. Some wording is less precise or natural: “parking space” is repeated several times, “take some steps” is general, and “check whether the parking space is used by the residents” does not clearly express checking for unauthorised users. More precise alternatives and a few varied terms would show greater flexibility and control. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, though occasional word-choice and collocation issues keep it from sounding consistently natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “Sometimes, I have to park my car away from the building, which is inconvenient and stressful” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. However, some grammatical and punctuation errors persist: “I look forward to hear from you” should be “I look forward to hearing from you,” and the comma after “especially” is unnecessary. There are also inconsistent sentence spaces and missing spaces after full stops, as in “4.I” and “work.It.” Capitalise “I” consistently. These are generally minor and do not obstruct communication, but correcting them and maintaining accuracy across the letter would strengthen grammatical control.
