Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ramin,
I am writing this letter to explain a problem that I am facing almost every other day. The issue is that, i cannot find any parking spot whenever i reach home from work.
My work location is 2 hours away from the appartment as a result, i always return late from work and i cannot find any space to park my car. Parking lot is always full as everybody else reaches earlier than me.
This situation is occuring almost everyday and it is causing a great deal of frustation everyday. Because of this situation, i need to park my car in the parking lot which is 2 blocks away from my place which wastes my time and i could not get enough sleep.
I would like to suggest if you could alot me a designated spot for parking. It will be easier for me to commute for my work.
Thank you for your time. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jaspreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that the lot is full when you return from work, describe the inconvenience of parking two blocks away and losing sleep, and request a designated space. The purpose is clear and appropriate for a letter to a landlord. The explanation of why the problem occurs is relevant, but the request could be more fully developed: for example, ask whether a space can be reserved or propose a system that gives residents fair access. The phrase “It will be easier for me to commute for my work” does not clearly explain how a designated space would help with commuting. More precise support for your proposed solution would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the parking problem, explains your work schedule and its effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Because of this situation” make the cause-and-effect relationship understandable. However, some connections feel repetitive or mechanical: “everyday” and “Because of this situation” repeat ideas already stated, while the second paragraph combines several points in one long sentence. The final request would also connect more clearly to the preceding explanation if you explicitly stated that a reserved space would prevent the need to park farther away. Varying transitions and tightening repeated information would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation, using relevant terms such as “parking spot,” “designated spot,” and “a great deal of frustration.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions limit the range and control: “appartment,” “occuring,” “frustation,” and “alot” should be corrected, while “the parking lot which is 2 blocks away from my place” could be expressed more naturally as “a lot two blocks from my apartment.” “My work location is 2 hours away” is also less precise than saying your commute takes two hours. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, while varying repeated words such as “situation” and “parking.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect construction in “Because of this situation, I need to park…” and a relative clause in “the parking lot which is 2 blocks away.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors recur. For example, “i cannot” needs a capital letter, and “Parking lot is always full” needs an article (“The parking lot…”). The sentence beginning “My work location is 2 hours away…” joins clauses with a comma where a full stop or conjunction would be clearer. “I could not get enough sleep” would fit the ongoing situation better as “I cannot get enough sleep.” More accurate clause boundaries and consistent tense would strengthen control.
