You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Malik,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding the inconvenience I have been facing because of no empty parking space left for me when I get home from work. I would like to request your assistance in this matter.

To begin with, I would like to explain the situation in detail, whenever I get back home after my working hours there is no parking spot left for me to park my car. I believe other tenants have multiple cars so they use multiple parking slots.

Unfortunately, this situation has caused several difficulties for me. I had to use paid parking on the public street which increases my expenses everyday. The paid parking is at 10 minutes walking distance which adds to my daily commute.

I would appreciate if you could please allocate a specific parking spot for me everyday as I am already paying extra for money for that in my monthly rent. I believe this would be a fair way to resolve this situation.

I hope you will be able to assist me in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Dilpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe the recurring lack of spaces after work, explain the impact through extra parking costs and a longer walk, and request a specific space. Your purpose and polite position remain clear throughout, and the practical details make the complaint credible. The suggestion is relevant, though it could be developed further by asking the landlord to check whether spaces are being used by non-residents or to assign spaces to each apartment. The claim that other tenants have multiple cars is presented as a belief rather than a confirmed fact, so qualifying it or asking the landlord to investigate would make the reasoning more persuasive. Overall, the task is handled fully, with some room to extend the proposed solution.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: opening purpose, description of the parking problem, its consequences, and a request followed by a courteous closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “To begin with,” “Unfortunately,” and “I would appreciate” help signal the stages of the letter. The organisation is easy to follow, although some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated framing of the situation and request. The sentence beginning “To begin with” also joins two complete ideas with a comma, which interrupts the flow. A full stop or a linking word would improve the transition. More direct connections between the suspected multiple-car use and the proposed allocation system would make the progression even smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “inconvenience,” “allocate,” “resolve,” and “assistance.” These choices communicate the issue and maintain a suitably polite tone. Some phrasing is less natural or precise, however: “no empty parking space left for me” and “extra for money” do not express the ideas idiomatically, while “everyday” should be written as “every day” when referring to frequency. “Working hours” is understandable but less natural here than “work.” These inaccuracies do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more accurate collocations would make the letter sound more fluent and professional. Aim to use precise parking-related phrases consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes both straightforward sentences and more developed structures, such as “I believe other tenants have multiple cars so they use multiple parking slots.” Most of the message is understandable, and you use polite request forms effectively. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “To begin with, I would like to explain the situation in detail, whenever…,” a comma incorrectly joins two independent clauses; use a full stop or a suitable conjunction. In “I would appreciate if you could,” the construction needs “it” after “appreciate.” The phrase “I am already paying extra for money” also has an awkward grammatical pattern. Correcting these issues while retaining varied sentence forms would strengthen accuracy.
