Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Ashutosh,
Hope you are doing well!
I am writing this letter to inform you that I have finally rented the house by the lake that we had seen online.
Honestly, the pictures online didn't do justice to the real beauty of this house. It has this spacious porch surrounding the whole house with a swing in front and a curved seating arrangement at the back. The porch is covered with hanging flower vases.
Once we enter the house, there is a huge hall with a huge 3D figure of a tiger, a seating arrangement with an adjustable coffee table and a curved TV. On the right, there is a corridor to the bedroom and on the left is the open kitchen with an island and a door to the porch. In front, you have a wall-to-wall glass door that leads to the backyard from where a path goes straight to the lake with a wooden walkway in the water. They even have a boat if the guest wants to go boating in the lake.
I am here till the end of the month. It would be great if you can join and don't forget to bring my niece with you. She is gonna love it here.
Yours sincerely,
Urvi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided a vivid description of the house, explained how you are spending your time, and included a clear invitation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and enthusiastic. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the house, which creates a clear mental image for the reader. The letter flows naturally and meets all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use transition phrases like 'Once we enter the house' and 'On the right' to guide the reader through the space effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the exterior to the interior and then to the invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making it easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive terms such as 'spacious porch', 'curved seating arrangement', and 'wall-to-wall glass door'. The language is natural and fits the context of a friendly letter well. While some of the vocabulary is relatively straightforward, it is used accurately and effectively to convey your message. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to add flair to your descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use relative clauses effectively, such as 'from where a path goes straight to the lake'. There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. The use of punctuation is generally correct, helping to maintain the flow of the text. The sentence structure is varied, which keeps the reader engaged throughout the letter.
