Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Aman,

I am fine and hope you are sailing on the same boat. I am happy to inform you that I have rented a new cottage near the lake in Manali for summer vacations.

My house is surrounded by greenery, and snow filled mountains. Moreover, I can see the view of sunrise, and sunset from the bedroom window that refresh my mind and calm down my anxiety. Besides, I spend my whole day with nature. I also enjoy many water activities like boating, ski diving, and swimming. Additionally, I enjoyed tracking on large mountain, and did snow skating. There are multifarious tourist places near my home which we can explore together. I would like to invite you on my new cottage for dinner, and spend your vocation with me. We can visit the nearby zoo, museum, and famous waterfalls of Manali. I will be glad if you come to my house next week.

I look forward to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Yours lovingly,

Rajdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing activities, and extending an invitation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. The response is well-structured and maintains a consistent focus on the prompt, ensuring the reader understands the context of the summer vacation in Manali. There are no omissions, and the response effectively communicates the intended message.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the description of the house from the activities and the invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Besides', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to follow and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task. You used some good descriptive phrases like 'surrounded by greenery' and 'multifarious tourist places'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'ski diving' (likely meant 'skydiving' or 'skiing') and 'tracking' (should be 'trekking'). The phrase 'sailing on the same boat' is an idiom, but it is used slightly incorrectly in this context. Despite these minor issues, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'I look forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing') and 'invite you on my new cottage' (should be 'to'). There are also minor punctuation and preposition errors, such as 'view of sunrise, and sunset' where the comma is unnecessary. However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is generally good, and the variety of structures used is adequate for this level.
