Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Eldho,

I am writing this letter to describe the house which I rented on the last week. The house is located near one of the largest lake, named Lake Huron and it is an absolute marvelous to stay here for summer.

The house is a two storey building with two bedrooms, a bathroom and beautiful balcony with stunning views. Also, It has a living room attached to a kitchen so that we can cook whenever we need to.

I am planning to spend my time by doing trekking and fishing. Moreover, the trail over here is almost 15km with one side having lake view, while the other is mountain. Furthermore, there is a park where everyone sit and talk to each other.

It will be more fun if you can come next weekend, so that we can go for a boat ride and do so much activities together. This would be your best vacation because this is a small town with natural beauty and peaceful environment.

I am looking forward to hear from you

Yours lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the house, detailing your activities, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions are slightly more detailed. For instance, while you mention the house has two bedrooms and a balcony, adding a bit more descriptive flair or personal feeling about the space would better develop your ideas. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks for each topic. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between describing the house and your activities could be more fluid. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'stunning views', 'natural beauty', and 'peaceful environment'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'absolute marvelous' (should be 'absolutely marvelous') and 'do so much activities' (should be 'do so many activities'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that your control over less common vocabulary is still developing. Focusing on correct collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'rented on the last week' (should be 'rented last week'), 'one of the largest lake' (should be 'one of the largest lakes'), and 'everyone sit and talk' (should be 'everyone sits and talks'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error with 'Also, It has'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Increasing your accuracy in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will significantly improve your score.
