Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hi Sam,

How're you? Hope this letter finds you well. I'm very delighted to inform you that I've rented a house by a lake for this summer. The house is truly spacious with three bedroom and a small garden in front of the house. The house also has an inbuilt swimming pool where we can do pool party.

The place is very relaxing and you can enjoy the breathtaking views of lake with lush of greenery. It a place where we can do bonfire and at night enjoy the view of stars. Further, if we want we can cook food by our own instead of ordering it from outside.

I would really recommend if you can come and visit me. We can spend time together and create a lot of new memories. Let's get enjoy our childhood again by making a small sand castle near the lake. I know you are busy but you can make a plan on weekend to see me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours lovingly,

Navdeep Kahlon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the house, explaining how you are spending your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and friendly. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid detail in your descriptions—for example, describing the interior decor or specific activities you have already enjoyed—to further develop your ideas and make the letter more engaging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Further' and 'I know you are busy but', which help connect your thoughts. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your transitions between sentences feel more natural rather than mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'breathtaking views' and 'lush of greenery' are good attempts at descriptive language. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do pool party' (should be 'have a pool party') and 'lush of greenery' (should be 'lush greenery'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives and natural collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'three bedroom' (should be 'three bedrooms'), 'It a place' (missing 'is'), and 'cook food by our own' (should be 'cook our own food'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
