Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to share exciting news about rented house by a lake for this summer.

I want to illustrate about what kind of house it is and how it looks like. It is an Individual house which is located by countryside. It has 3 bedroom and a kitchen with a beautiful view of lake from balcony and also barbeque outside.

We can spend time together as soon as we go their first thing we can do is explore the place a little bit and then we can do barbeque. After it gets darker we can do campfire and play some games and do chitchatting.

I know we have been waiting for long time to enjoy summer like this. I'm so excited and would like to welcome you to join which helps both of us to relieve stress.

Looking forward to hear back from you.

Yours Lovingly

Divya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the house, explaining how time is spent, and inviting the friend. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. The description of the house is functional but lacks descriptive depth, and the invitation is a bit abrupt. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, the ideas could be expanded with more specific details to better engage the reader and fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 response. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For instance, the transition between the description of the house and the activities is abrupt. More varied linking words and better referencing (e.g., using 'this' or 'which' to connect ideas more fluidly) would improve the flow. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'illustrate about what kind of house it is' and 'do chitchatting' are unnatural or informal in a way that doesn't quite fit standard English collocations. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a friendly letter, such as 'picturesque' instead of 'beautiful' or 'catch up' instead of 'do chitchatting'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'rented house' (missing article), '3 bedroom' (should be plural), 'go their' (incorrect homophone for 'there'), and 'Looking forward to hear' (should be 'hearing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that verb forms following phrases like 'looking forward to' are used correctly.
