Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Kelsey,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to let you know that I have rented a house by the lake for the summer because I have to work in a nearby town for a few months.

Since the construction season began, I have been very busy and forgot to write you back. I had to travel a lot from my home to the site everyday and that is why I decided to rent a house. It is a 4 bedroom house on a great 1 acre property with a lake right in front of it. I always wanted to stay by the lake and now It will be fulfilled this summer. There is a horse stable as well near to the house and Owner has given me the responsibility to feed them.

This summer I am eager to do fishing and I have already bought a kayak to explore the whole lake. Every week we are going to organise music nights on Fridays. My kids love to swim in the water and every Sunday we are going to start campfire. However, I need to buy some safety equipments before we dive in the water.

I know that you really love horses and when I am away, you and my wife can take care of them. You can always use our projector room if you get bored. Even thanksgiving is coming soon, so this is a formal invitation to enjoy dinner with us next saturday.

I hope I will hear from you soon, I have already made some arrangements for you so It will be great if you join us.

Yours sincerely,

Suhel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, explained how you are spending your time, and provided a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed, such as the mention of the horse stable and the specific activities like kayaking and music nights. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are balanced; for instance, the invitation could be slightly more integrated into the narrative of the letter rather than appearing as a separate request at the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since,' 'However,' and 'Even,' to link your thoughts. To improve, try to vary your transition words further and ensure that referencing is always precise. For example, in the second paragraph, 'Owner' should be 'the owner' to maintain grammatical flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is smooth and the letter is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'responsibility,' 'organise,' and 'arrangements' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'do fishing' (should be 'go fishing') and 'safety equipments' ('equipment' is an uncountable noun). While these errors do not impede communication, refining these collocations would elevate your score. You have a good grasp of informal language suitable for a letter to a friend, which is a strength.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'It will be fulfilled' (referring to a desire rather than a promise), 'Owner has given' (missing article), and 'next saturday' (needs capitalization). Additionally, 'every Sunday we are going to start campfire' requires an article ('a campfire'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the majority of your sentences are structurally sound. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher band.
