Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Melwin,
How are you, my friend? I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to you because I want to inform you a great news.
Firstly, I would like to inform you that I rented a building near the lake. I want you to come and visit here when you get a free time. The house is really huge with lot of entertainment equipment. I have a surprise for you, I will show you when come over here.
When I get leisure time, I go to the lake and have a couple of drinks, which helps me to get relax. There is one more exciting thing is that there is a trail nearby my house, around 10 kilometer wide.
I would be grateful if come and join with me one day; it's been a while we last saw each other.
I look forward your response buddy.
best friend

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the house, explaining how you spend your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, describing the house as 'really huge' is quite generic, and the description of the trail as '10 kilometer wide' is likely a misuse of vocabulary (perhaps you meant 'long'). To reach a higher band, try to provide more descriptive detail and specific examples to bring your ideas to life for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different topics, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'Firstly' and 'There is one more exciting thing' are functional but basic. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a smoother flow between your sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'inform you a great news' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'inform you of some great news'), and 'get relax' should be 'relax' or 'get relaxed'. Additionally, '10 kilometer wide' is likely an error in word choice, as trails are usually described by their length rather than width. Focusing on more precise collocations will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'when you get a free time' (missing 'a'), 'when come over here' (missing subject 'you'), and 'I look forward your response' (missing 'to'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. Working on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will be beneficial.
