Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
You won't imagine how delighted I am writing this letter to you. The reason for such a delight is a house which I have rented for 2 months by the lake Ontario. I am currently planning to spend the entire duration here at this house. The rent agreement also includes a modest boat which I can take out for fishing or for a leisure trip into the lake. The lake is surrounded by a vibrant foliage of the dense forest.
My wife and my daughter are here with me on this vacation and we couldn't be more grateful about our decision to spend some time away from home and building a stronger family bond during the period. I generally consume my time reading books about history and historical wars by the lake shore. We frequently go fishing as well as my daughter loves swim intthe lake.
This week we had visitors from my wife side, her friends and few of her family members visited us. It was fun and I believe it would be even more fun is you along with your wife and son would like to visit us for 2 or 3 days next week. I cannot imagine how many activities we could do together in and around the lake. There are so many adventure trails around the lake not far away from the house that we may choose for a day hike.
I am eagerly waiting for your response.
Regards,
Ethan Hunt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, explained how you are spending your time, and extended a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are fully integrated; for instance, the mention of the boat is a great detail, but you could have elaborated slightly more on the house's interior or specific features to further enhance the descriptive quality of your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the description of the house, your activities, and the invitation. There is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. While you use some cohesive devices like 'The reason for such a delight' and 'In addition', some transitions could be more natural. For example, the shift to the invitation in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'vibrant foliage', 'leisure trip', and 'modest boat'. These choices are appropriate and help convey your message clearly. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'consume my time' (better: 'spend my time') and 'swim intthe' (a typo). While you attempt to use more descriptive language, some phrasing is slightly repetitive or simplistic. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices sound natural in an informal context. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'You won't imagine' (should be 'You can't imagine'), 'by the lake Ontario' (remove 'the'), and 'if you along with your wife... would like' (should be 'if you, along with your wife... would like'). Additionally, there is a minor typo 'intthe'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help you achieve greater accuracy in your writing.
