Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hi Joan,
I hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter to inform you about my new rented wonderful house which I have rented for the summer. It is a beautiful two story cottage with having three bedrooms, One modern kitchen and a big balcony overlooking a lake. Moreover, it included a small garden where I can sit and enjoy the fresh air.
Usually, I spent my great time with having different activities, In the morning, I go for the walk on side of lake road or take swim. During the afternoon, I cook meal near the window area in my kitchen and enjoy a fantastic moment or sometime I go for kayaking. Afterwards in the Evening, I take some tea or coffee and enjoy the sunset and that’s a amazing view.
I would love you to come and stay with me for few days. I am sure you would love this and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. All outdoor activities would make your day special. Let me know whenever you are free we can arrange your trip. I am really looking forward to seeing you.
Best wishes,
Ankita

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, detailed your daily activities, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more vivid detail about the house or the specific activities to further develop your ideas, but overall, the response is well-focused and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, each corresponding to a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Usually', and 'Afterwards' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between describing the house and the daily activities is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that's an amazing view') is more precise will help improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'overlooking', 'peaceful', and 'surroundings' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'spent my great time' instead of 'spend my time' or 'take some tea' instead of 'have some tea'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more natural collocations. To improve, focus on learning common phrases used in everyday English and try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives to enhance the imagery of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'with having three bedrooms' (should be 'which has three bedrooms'), 'go for the walk on side of lake road' (should be 'go for a walk by the lake'), and 'that’s a amazing view' (should be 'an amazing view'). These errors occur frequently but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage (a/an/the) and verb tense consistency, particularly when describing habitual actions.
