Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well. I’m writing to tell you about the house I have rented for the summer. It is a lovely small house near a beautiful lake, and I am really enjoying my time here.
The house is quite comfortable and has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a small garden. There is also a large window in the living room, so I can see the lake from inside the house. The area is very quiet and peaceful, which makes it a perfect place to relax.
I usually spend my mornings walking around the lake or swimming. In the afternoon, I often read books in the garden and sometimes go fishing. In the evenings, I cook dinner and sit outside to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views.
I would love you to come and visit me. You could stay here for a few days, and we could enjoy the lake together. Let me know when you are free, and I will make all the arrangements.
Best wishes,
Jennifer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter fully addresses all three bullet points: the house is described in terms of its layout and location, daily activities are clearly outlined, and a warm invitation is extended. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent and friendly register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task without being overly wordy. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. Cohesive devices such as 'The house is', 'There is also', and 'In the afternoon' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The transition between describing the house and the daily routine is smooth. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall flow of the letter is natural and easy to read.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is natural and appropriate for a personal letter. While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it relies on fairly common descriptors like 'lovely', 'beautiful', and 'comfortable'. To reach a higher band, the student could incorporate more precise or descriptive adjectives to paint a more vivid picture of the setting. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation, and the language is used accurately to express the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The area is very quiet and peaceful, which makes it a perfect place to relax.' Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of sentences are error-free, reflecting a high level of control. To improve further, the student could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence structures or more sophisticated verb tenses to add stylistic variety.
