Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hello Savan,

I hope you are feeling well. It's been so long since we left the college and not met together due to busy schedule. This summer i have already leased a house on the lake Ontario. A house has 3 bedrooms, two washroom, a kitchen, a backyard and front porch.

The house is on the corner lot.

Currently I am enjoying there while sit in the backyard and connecting to the nature. The neighbours are also good and helpful. I have cooked some food for me on the barbique and enjoying the drinks alone. I miss you allot while remembering our old college days and parties.

I have a plan for us to feel the old days and get together for some days to take a break from busy life. I can send you the details today in the evening with full address so, you can come this weekend and we can enjoy same as we did before and do activities as well in the water like rafting. I hope you can visit and enjoy with me on this beautiful place.

Yours lovingly,

Parmjit Jawandha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the house, explaining how you are spending your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the house is a simple list of rooms, and the description of your activities could be more descriptive to better engage the reader. To improve, try to add more detail or personal reflection to your descriptions to fully develop the points rather than just stating them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'currently' and 'so'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the jump from describing the house to your daily activities could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that your referencing (e.g., 'the house', 'this') is always clear will help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to complete the task, such as 'leased', 'backyard', and 'rafting'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'not met together' instead of 'not seen each other', 'barbique' (spelling error), and 'enjoying the drinks alone' (which sounds a bit unnatural). To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring your spelling is accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would also make your writing more engaging.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'not met together due to busy schedule' (missing articles), 'i have already leased' (capitalization), and 'enjoying there while sit' (incorrect verb form). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and consistent verb tenses will significantly improve your score.
