Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Anjali,

How are you? I hope you are doing great in your life. It has been so long to see you.

Actually, I wanted to tell you something exiting. I am renting a house beside a lake this entire summer in the southern end of Winnipeg. It is a beautiful 3 bedroom house with spacious living room and a fully furnished kitchen with modern appliances. A front car garage is also a part of this, which can accommodate two SUVs. The most amazing feature is the backyard, which is connects to the lake and the spectacle is unforgettable.

I have taken a parental leave as I have a two month old baby. The days are very calm, refreshing and relaxing here. I am experiencing a lot of calmness here. I expected my postpartum journey to be very stressing but this house turned it as I am on a vacation as the environment is amazing and very cozy because watching the lake and having walks around the area feels a blessing.

I am inviting you to visit me so that you can get this incredible experience as well. It will act like a therapy to you and you will thank me a lot. Moreover, we can have some quality time and it will help you relax. I will wait for your response. Please let me know.

Regards,

Harpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing your activities, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being warm and personal. You have provided sufficient detail, such as the house features and your current situation with your baby, which makes the content engaging. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the invitation is well-integrated into the final paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are grammatically precise to avoid minor confusion, such as the phrasing regarding the backyard connection.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the house description to your daily life and finally to the invitation. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Actually' to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences feel more natural rather than mechanical. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive terms like 'spacious', 'modern appliances', and 'unforgettable'. There are some minor word-choice errors, such as 'exiting' instead of 'exciting' and 'stressing' instead of 'stressful'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. You have attempted to use some less common collocations, which is positive. To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and ensuring that your word forms (e.g., nouns vs. adjectives) are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'which is connects to' (should be 'which connects to') and 'turned it as I am on a vacation' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors. Despite these, the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
