Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Harsimran

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to tell you about the house I rented for the summer. As you already know that I have summer holidays from my school so I rented a house by a lake for these holidays. The house gives me positive vibes as it is surrounded by trees. I am so happy by the environment of this house as it is so peaceful. Moreover, in evenings, I spend my leisure time by reading books near the lake. It provides so much positivity to me.

Also, I advise you to come and visit here so that we will spend a good time. I promise you will feel very engaged by visiting here. As you also have summer holidays, it is good idea to spend your holidays in this house with me.

I look forward to your response.

Best regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: describing the house, explaining how you spend your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the house is surrounded by trees and peaceful, providing more specific details about the interior or the view would have made the description more vivid. Similarly, the invitation is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, aim to expand on your points with more descriptive language and specific examples to fully engage the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, and the progression of ideas is clear. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'As you already know' to link your sentences. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block of text. To improve, you should separate the different topics—the house description, your activities, and the invitation—into distinct paragraphs. This would significantly improve the visual structure and readability of your letter, which is essential for higher band scores in coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a range of vocabulary that is adequate for the task, such as 'leisure time', 'surrounded', and 'peaceful'. However, there is a tendency to repeat simple words like 'house', 'holidays', and 'good'. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'happy by the environment' (should be 'happy with') or 'feel very engaged by visiting' (which is unclear in this context). To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and focus on learning natural word pairings (collocations) to express your thoughts more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'As you already know that I have...' is redundant; 'As you know, I have...' is more natural. You also have issues with prepositions, such as 'visit here' (simply 'visit' or 'come here') and 'happy by' instead of 'happy with'. Punctuation is generally fine, but ensure you avoid run-on sentences. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help you achieve a higher score.
