Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well,I received your invitation for the retirement party and i want to say i am really happy for you father. In last letter we discussed that how engaging our schedules have been so i decided to take a break from my work for the summer .

I have decided to rent an Airbnb beside the lake "Louise "for the summer .I must say the view from the house is breath taking. Interesting, the house is having four bedrooms, one full and one half washroom and a beautiful outdoor kitchen which make the experience more rejuvenating . Surprisingly, It has been one week that haven't used any of my social media ,There are many activities to do in the area ,for instance; horse riding ,cycling and pottery.

I would appreciate if you visit and share the same experience with me and please do not hesitate to bring your parents as well .

I would look forward for your company and hope you have a great time .

yours lovingly,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing your activities, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the opening paragraph is slightly off-topic as it discusses a retirement party invitation, which was not part of the prompt. To improve, ensure all content directly relates to the task instructions. The description of the house and activities is clear, and the invitation is warm and welcoming, meeting the requirements for a General Training Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices like 'for instance' and 'surprisingly' to link ideas. However, there are some issues with punctuation and sentence boundaries, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...doing well,I received...') and the awkward phrasing in the second paragraph ('Interesting, the house is having...'). Improving the use of transition words and ensuring sentences are correctly punctuated would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using descriptive terms like 'breath taking' and 'rejuvenating'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the house is having' (should be 'the house has') and 'I would look forward for' (should be 'I look forward to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and phrasal verbs to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions, such as 'I haven't used' instead of 'I haven't been using' and 'I would look forward for' instead of 'I look forward to'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and incorrect semicolon usage. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
