Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Tim,

Hope you are doing great. It's been so long we haven't met. This hot summer is killing me dude and finally I got a nice place to spend some time.

To get rid of this heat wave, I've booked an Airbnb near Muskoka lakeshore for ten days from September 6 to 16th. It's a two bedroom house with fully furnished kitchen, where we can cook delicious meals and of course, a balcony with breathtaking views of sunset. Its located at the lake so we can barbecue and enjoy the calm evenings.

Let me fill you in with detailed plan for spending time there. On the arrival day, we'll visit Royal castle, which is just a 5 minute drive from the place. On the following day, we will go on hiking on trails the famous one is Beaver's trail and some falls nearby. For next few days we'll explore local places and markets , amusement parks and attractions. Oh, I have booked a kayak so that's also on list.

You shouldn't miss all this fun. I will be happy if you join me and I promised you won't regret. So don't delay as this is the best time to visit Muskoka.

Can't wait to travel together.

With Love,

Ron

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing activities, and inviting the friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, such as the specific mention of the balcony view and the planned activities like kayaking and hiking. The response is coherent and provides sufficient detail to satisfy the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning to the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction to the description of the house, then the itinerary, and finally the invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'To get rid of', 'On the arrival day', and 'On the following day' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making it easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an informal letter. You use some descriptive phrases like 'breathtaking views' and 'calm evenings' effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'fill you in with detailed plan' (should be 'a detailed plan') and 'on list' (should be 'on the list'). While the range is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated idiomatic expressions or varied adjectives would elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'It's been so long we haven't met' (a more natural phrasing would be 'It's been a long time since we last met') and 'Its located' (should be 'It's located'). Additionally, there are occasional missing articles, such as 'at the lake' or 'on trails'. Despite these slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
