Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Tanvi,

How are you doing? its been while we are not meeting. recently I borrow a house on lease alongside the lake which gives the pleasant and quiet vibe. this house has three bedroom and attached washroom to every room. I rent this house for vacation, as I know you are scenic lover and this house at the top of the hill , on the right side of this house there is a lake.

I have good idea to spend our time as you are fond of fishing so we can enjoy that activity in the morning or evening time. The new thing is want to discuss is I have learned new recipes so we can try these too. Fortunately , this is a good to watch spectacular view of lake by boat.

I am really excited to spend some quality time with you, so I would suggest you to come and live some time in this house with me.

With love,

Manpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the house, explaining how you are spending your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the house has three bedrooms, adding more descriptive detail about the interior or the atmosphere would have made the response more engaging. Similarly, the invitation is a bit abrupt. Expanding on why you specifically want your friend to visit would strengthen the task response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the description of the house to activities and finally the invitation. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the jump between describing the house and the activities is a bit sudden. Improving the variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') would help the flow of the letter and improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'spectacular view' and 'scenic lover'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'borrow a house on lease' (should be 'rented a house') and 'scenic lover' (should be 'nature lover' or 'someone who appreciates scenery'). Additionally, there are minor errors in word formation, like 'three bedroom' (should be 'three bedrooms'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary and ensure that collocations sound natural in English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'its been while we are not meeting' (should be 'it has been a while since we met'), 'I borrow a house' (should be 'I have rented a house'), and 'this is a good to watch' (should be 'this is a good place to watch'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
