Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Petar,

I hope you are doing great. You will be glad to hear that I have rented a house near north lake.

This is a two bedroom small house which has one studio basement. It has large car parking space and backside of house there are park.

As I moved here last week so everything is new for me here. My neighbour are very friendly who are in their 80's. I mostly spend my time talking with him. In addition, in the evening I went to a gym which is only two kilometer far away from my place.

I would like to invite you at my home in upcoming long weekends. We will go out for dinner and will go to cinema. It would be great fun with you.

I look forward to catching you soon.

Best Wishes,

Jag

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the house, explaining how time is spent, and inviting the friend. However, the response is 10 words under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the description of the house is quite brief, and the invitation lacks specific details about the dates or the logistics of the visit. To improve, you should expand on your descriptions and ensure you meet the minimum word count to fully develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'As I moved here', which provide some structure. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and the transition between the description of the house and the neighbors feels abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences are connected more fluidly to create a more natural, cohesive narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for a general letter, but it is somewhat repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'small house' and 'great fun' are functional but lack the sophistication expected at higher levels. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'large car parking space' (better: 'spacious parking area') and 'two kilometer far away' (better: 'two kilometers away'). To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and natural collocations to describe your surroundings and activities, rather than relying on simple, high-frequency words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'My neighbour are very friendly who are in their 80's' contains a subject-verb agreement error and awkward phrasing. Additionally, 'I mostly spend my time talking with him' (referring to a plural 'neighbour' or singular?) and 'I would like to invite you at my home' (should be 'to my home') show issues with prepositions and consistency. Increasing your control over basic grammar and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
