Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you're doing well.

I'm writing this letter to tell you that I rented a house by the lake for the summer.

Firstly, this is a very spacious house with a large master bedroom and two other rooms. Moreover, its kitchen is equipped with all the modern appliances. Also, the view from the balcony is considerably beautiful. Especially in the mornings and the evenings, the scenes are eye-catching.

Moving forward, I woke up at around 6:00 am. As you know, the first thing to do in the morning is go for a walk. A walk beside the lake is wonderful experience.

That is why I decided to invite to visit here and enjoy the experience. I believe we both can spend quality time togather here far from city's fast paced life.

Thank you for considering my offer. I look forward to hearing from you back soon.

Yours truly,

DAvid

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the house, explaining how you spend your time, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the house is spacious, providing more specific details about the layout or the atmosphere would have strengthened the response. Similarly, the description of your daily routine is brief. To improve, try to expand on your ideas with more descriptive language or personal anecdotes to fully engage the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the description of the house, then to your activities, and finally the invitation. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Moving forward' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Moving forward' to introduce a daily routine. Paragraphing is present, but the structure could be more refined to ensure a smoother flow between the different sections of your letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'modern appliances', 'eye-catching', and 'fast-paced life' are used effectively. There are a few minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'considerably beautiful' (which is not a standard collocation) and 'invite to visit' (which is missing an object, e.g., 'invite you to visit'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I woke up' (should be 'I wake up' to match the present tense context), 'wonderful experience' (missing an article: 'a wonderful experience'), and 'togather' (spelling error). Additionally, 'I look forward to hearing from you back soon' is slightly redundant; 'I look forward to hearing from you soon' is more natural. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
