Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to gently invite you at my new house which I rented last week for summer vacation.

Basically I rented a cottage house near Gillies Lake for two months. It is a two story house with penalty of space and there is a attached deck with a lake for swimming. Landlord provided me extra utilities such as cooking grill, fire wood, and utensils.

As now I am exploring several nearby areas such as hiking trails, camping areas, and view points. Moreover, I also build a temporary shooting range which is favorite part as now.

I gently want you to come here and join my company because we didn't spent too much time together in past five years. I know you love natural things and I am sure you will like this green place. Also, I am planning to do some camping with you, as you know I am not quit feel comfortable when I do camping alone.

Thank you for you time. See you next week.

Best Regards,

Simran.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the cottage, explained your current activities, and extended a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to give the reader a clear picture of your situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the task are developed with equal depth; for instance, the description of the house could be slightly more vivid to enhance the reader's engagement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between describing the house and your activities could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'as now' used twice in different contexts. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would help create a more natural and fluid progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'cottage', 'utilities', and 'exploring'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder precision. For example, 'penalty of space' is an incorrect collocation (likely meant 'plenty'), and 'natural things' is quite vague. Furthermore, 'not quit feel comfortable' contains a spelling error ('quit' instead of 'quite'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more specific adjectives to describe your surroundings, which will help you convey your message with greater impact and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'invite you at my new house' (should be 'to'), 'landlord provided me' (missing article 'The'), 'I also build' (incorrect tense; should be 'have built'), and 'didn't spent' (incorrect verb form; should be 'spend'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your score.
