Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Maanish,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to invite you to my my place that i rented this month and i would be happy if you come starting of next month.

Recently i rented to newly build house on the lake side for this summer. The house is quiet spacious and have every facilities. It has three bedrooms with attached bathrooms, modern kitchen and large living room. Each room has balcony with the lakeside view which i think is the best part of the house.

I spend most of my time outside, i go on morning walk on the lakeshore where i see the sun rise and in evening i do barbecue in the backyard and read books in quiet atmosphere.

I want you to come and stay with me for some days. I know you will enjoy the stunning views and the relaxing atmosphere near the house. Let me know when you are free, and I’ll make all the arrangements.

Best Wishes,

Harmanpreet Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing how time is spent, and extending an invitation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear from the outset. While the description of the house and activities is sufficient, the development of these ideas could be slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. For instance, expanding on the 'modern kitchen' or the specific types of books read would add more depth. However, the response is fully relevant and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the invitation to the description of the house, then to daily activities, and finally to the closing invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'Recently', 'Each room', and 'I know you will' are used effectively to link sentences. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of punctuation (specifically commas) could be improved to enhance the flow between clauses.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some good collocations like 'stunning views' and 'relaxing atmosphere'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'newly build' instead of 'newly built' and 'have every facilities' instead of 'has every facility'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise vocabulary and ensure correct word forms are used consistently throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'i rented to newly build house' (should be 'I rented a newly built house') and 'i spend most of my time' (should be 'I spend' or 'I have been spending'). Additionally, there are consistent issues with capitalization of the pronoun 'I'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and basic punctuation is needed.
