Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Brittney,

I hope you're doing well!

I am writing to let you know that I have rented a house for the summer by a lake. The house is beautiful and with scenic views. It has a large window in a living room and two rooms are on upper level with attached bathroom. The kitchen is designed in such a way that you feel like to cook something.

I feel like it is worth paying rent because I am sitting in the backyard with a lake view. People are enjoying and fishing around the lake. I am doing all the water activities in a lake such as kayaki, swimming, and doing evening walks. It is so peaceful and I am feeling happy content by making this decision.

I would like to invite you and visit me at this beautiful house. I hope you can make it and we can enjoy together.

see you soon

yours sincerely,

Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: describing the house, detailing your activities, and inviting your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the house could be more vivid, and the invitation is quite brief. To reach a higher band, try to expand on your descriptions with more specific details—such as the atmosphere of the kitchen or the specific nature of the lake activities—to provide a more engaging and complete response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices like 'I am writing to' and 'I would like to', which help the flow. However, the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, which will help the letter feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'scenic views', 'peaceful', and 'content'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'kayaki' (likely a spelling error for kayaking) and 'happy content', which should be 'happy and content'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions would enhance your writing and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'with scenic views' (lacks a subject/verb), 'in a living room' (should be 'the'), and 'two rooms are on upper level' (missing article). Additionally, 'you feel like to cook' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'you feel like cooking'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and verb patterns will significantly improve your accuracy.
