Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello pat,

Hoping you are enjoying the warm weather. I am writing this to invite you to have a more exciting summer experience at my temporary place for this summer.

As you must be aware of my love for summer vacations I have booked a house close to the lake shore, Ajax. It’s a villa by the lake. Has three bedrooms and backyard that opens into shore with inbuilt barbecue grill and an incredible walkway that leads to forest. I am spend most of my time by walks into the forest area and enjoying sunrise and sunset by the lake. Also, there are multiple ways to spend time by playing volleyball at the shore etc. I thoroughly enjoy being here and I do miss you being here as you will love this too.

I would like to invite you for next weekend and enjoy this wonderful experience and looking forward to spend great time together and replenish some memories. We can arrange the barbecue over the weekend and a some singing sessions at night while doing campfire while drinking our favourite beer.

Really excited and can’t wait for the weekend. Come soon and let’s enjoy!!

Yours truly,

Hesha.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, explained how you are spending your time, and extended a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and friendly. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to give the reader a clear picture of your summer experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are balanced; for instance, the description of the house could be slightly more integrated with the activities to create a more cohesive narrative.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As you must be aware' and 'Also', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as the jump between describing the house and your daily activities. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures could be tightened to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'replenish', 'inbuilt', and 'villa' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'replenish some memories' (which is slightly unnatural; 'reminisce' or 'make new memories' would be better) and 'doing campfire' (which should be 'having a campfire'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am spend most of my time' (should be 'I spend' or 'I am spending') and 'a some singing sessions' (an unnecessary article). Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented, like 'Has three bedrooms and backyard'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
