Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I am writing this letter to inform you about how I am going to spend my summer this year. Unlike last time, this year I decided to do something productive so I eventually enrolled my self in the university of Trent, Peterborough campus. I applied for a part time flying course and got accepted. I already moved to the city as it would be hard to find a accommodation later on.

I am excited to tell you that I have rented a house by a lake for the whole summer. The house is really nice and little far from the city making this place really peaceful and quite. The best part about the house it that it is really clean, spacious and have a patio facing the lake.

Moving ahead, I will be attending Trent part time, that means I only have to go 2 days per week. On rest of the days I will be spending my time experimenting new cuisines, practice some yoga early morning and enrolling in some additional online courses.

Furthermore, during weekend I will be exploring and roaming around the city as this city got some nice tourist spots and places.

I would like to invite you at my place. It will be fun you visiting me. I am confident that fun will be double if you join. Don't worry about the staying as I have an extra bed. Together, we can also plan a short camping trip.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Yours friend,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the house, explaining how you spend your time, and inviting your friend. However, the first paragraph is largely irrelevant to the prompt, as it focuses on your university enrollment rather than the house or the summer plans requested. To improve, ensure all content directly relates to the specific instructions provided. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout the latter sections of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Moving ahead' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the opening paragraph and the rest of the letter is weak, which affects the overall flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate the score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using descriptive adjectives like 'spacious' and 'peaceful'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'find a accommodation' (should be 'an accommodation') and 'experimenting new cuisines' (should be 'experimenting with'). While you communicate your meaning effectively, the vocabulary remains somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a friendly, informal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'have a patio' (should be 'has a patio'), 'on rest of the days' (should be 'on the rest of the days'), and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'looking forward to hearing'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor slips in article usage and verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and gerund usage after specific phrases will improve your accuracy.
