Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to tell about the wonderful house that I have rented for the summer. It is situated right beside a beautiful lake and I am already enjoying my stay here.

The house is quite spacious and cosy, with there bedrooms, a modern kitchen with equipment and a large living room with the huge windows that overlooking the lake. There is also small garden at the back, where I can sit and enjoy morning coffee. The best part is the wooden deck, which offers stunning view of sunset.

I have been spending my days in a relaxed way. In the mornings, I usually go for a walk around the lake and sometimes take a swim. In the afternoons, I read books, cook simple meals and occasionally for fishing. It the evening I sit outside and enjoy the sunset. It is a perfect break for my usual busy routine.

I would really love you to come and stay with me for a few days. We could explore area, go for boating and have a barbecue by the lake in the weekend. I am sure you would enjoy here. Let me know when you are free.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house in detail, explained how you are spending your time, and provided a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the description of the house to your daily activities and finally the invitation. You use cohesive devices such as 'The best part is', 'In the mornings', and 'In the afternoons' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, making the letter easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'stunning view of sunset', 'perfect break', and 'busy routine' are used naturally. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the huge windows that overlooking' (should be 'that overlook' or 'overlooking') and 'occasionally for fishing' (should be 'occasionally go fishing'). However, these do not impede communication and you show an ability to use descriptive language effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'with there bedrooms' (should be 'three'), 'There is also small garden' (missing article 'a'), and 'It the evening' (should be 'In the evening'), the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the errors present are non-systematic and do not cause confusion for the reader.
