Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Maria,
How are you? I hope you are doing well. I'm writing to tell you about the house, I have rented for the summer.
The house is small but beautiful located right beside a lake. It has two bedrooms with attached washrooms, living area, a modern kitchen and large balcony. There is beautiful garden at the back of house. The best highlight of the house is splendid view of the lake where i can sit and relax in the evening.
I an really enjoying my time here. In the mornings, I usually go for walk around the lake and sometimes I go for swimming. In the afternoon, I like to read books, cook any food and take photographs of the scenery. In the evenings I just like to sit in balcony and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
I would love you to come and stay with me for few days. I'm sure we would have a great time together. Let me know when you are free so that we can plan everything.
Take care and hope to see you soon.
Best wishes
Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. The description of the house is clear, covering its layout and features like the balcony and garden. Your daily activities, such as reading and photography, are well-described, and the invitation to your friend is warm and appropriately placed. The tone is consistently friendly and informal, which is perfect for a letter to a friend. You have fully developed your ideas, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide slightly more descriptive detail to fully flesh out the 'how you are spending your time' section, perhaps by adding a specific anecdote or a more vivid description of your feelings about the stay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'In the mornings', 'In the afternoon', and 'In the evenings' to sequence your activities effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of linking words or transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple time markers. This would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a personal letter, such as 'splendid view', 'peaceful atmosphere', and 'scenery'. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To move into a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common idiomatic expressions. For example, instead of saying 'cook any food', you could use 'prepare some meals'. Expanding your range of adjectives and adverbs would also add more color to your descriptions and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good control of basic and some complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are a few minor slips, such as 'I an really enjoying' (typo for 'am') and 'go for swimming' (should be 'go swimming'). You also missed a few articles, such as 'in balcony' (should be 'on the balcony') and 'for few days' (should be 'for a few days'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from being considered completely error-free. Focusing on article usage and proofreading for small typos will help you achieve a higher score.
