Student answer (Band 6.5)

dear friend,

I hope you are doing great . I am really excited to tell you about the house that my family rented for the summer vacation this year . Its a big house near a lake with great mountain view and amazing garden behind it . The most exciting part is that it have a big pool at the rooftop. I have my big room at second level . This house inspired by ancient roman housing design . In the living area there is a big tiger fur mat at the floor which looks great with the design of walls and pillar moreover goes amazing with the furniture . I spend great time swimming in the pool and walking by the lake. My sister baked me pineapple cake in the modern and amazing white marble kitchen. We played cards at night after dinner.

I wish if you would be here we will have great time together . I would like to invite you to come and spend the rest of vacation with me .My family and I will be happy to have to with us.

Your friend ,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, explained how you are spending your time, and extended a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are relevant. To improve, you could provide more specific details to better develop your ideas. For example, instead of just mentioning the lake and pool, you could describe the atmosphere or the specific activities you enjoy there. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'moreover' and 'after dinner' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words and transition phrases to connect your thoughts more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; the current structure is clear, but the transition between the description of the house and your daily activities could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some descriptive adjectives like 'amazing', 'modern', and 'ancient'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of the word 'big'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms or descriptive phrases to add variety and sophistication to your writing. For instance, instead of 'big house', you could use 'spacious villa' or 'imposing residence'. Your word choices are generally accurate and do not impede communication, but they lack the variety needed for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Its a big house' (should be 'It's'), 'it have a big pool' (should be 'it has'), and 'I wish if you would be here' (should be 'I wish you were here'). There are also some missing articles and minor punctuation issues. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will also help you achieve a higher score.
