Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Boothang,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to fill you in on the apartment I rented for the summer coming up. I will love you to come check it out.

The house is by the lake side around the mainland axis Lagos. It has a very lovely view with flowers, trees, and some horses and fish pond by the side. it is a 3 bedroom flat, well ventilated. It has a well equipped kitchen, a living room, and 2 rest rooms.

You will definitely enjoy the view, it is so maginificent and such a breath of fresh air. I will love to have you around for summer, so we will spend quality time together. Additional, as a lover of nature that you are, you will indeed enjoy your time here.

We can go horse riding on the first day, which after we should go to the beach side on the second day. On the 3rd time, we should go on a city tour to see around, and from there to the cinema to see Beauty in black that was released last week. We have varities of fun activities that we would try out for sure.

I look forward to us reconnecting and having a beautiful time together. i will call you shortly so we can discuss forward.

Much Love,

Esther.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the house, explained how you are spending your time, and provided a clear invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being informal and friendly. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the specific activities you suggest for your friend's visit. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are fully accurate; for instance, you mention a 'fish pond by the side' and 'horses' at a house, which is a bit unusual for a standard rental, but this does not detract from the overall task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The house is...', 'You will definitely enjoy...', and 'We can go...'. However, the transition 'Additional' is incorrect; 'Additionally' would be the correct adverbial form. Furthermore, the phrase 'which after we should go' is slightly awkward and could be improved for better flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and the letter is easy to read.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using descriptive words like 'well ventilated', 'well equipped', and 'magnificent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'maginificent' (magnificent), 'varities' (varieties), and 'rest rooms' (which usually refers to public toilets; 'bathrooms' would be more natural for a house). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I will love you to come' (should be 'I would love for you to come'), 'On the 3rd time' (should be 'On the third day'), and 'discuss forward' (should be 'discuss further'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some minor issues with capitalization and phrasing. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and phrasal verbs.
