Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jass
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I am very glad to share the news about the new place in Toronto, where I am staying this summer.
Actually, it's a one-bedroom apartment right in the downtown of Toronto. The apartment includes one big bedroom, a full kitchen equipped with all appliances, a huge bathroom and living area. The most fascinating thing about the condo is that it has an exceptionally beautiful balcony where I would be able to see scenic view of the whole city.
I rented this place because I got a summer job in Toronto, for four months, from May to August. I will be working on the weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm. After my shift, I am planning to visit all the places in Toronto as well as spare some time to rest at home.
It will be really fun if you could come and stay with me for a few days. We will do various activities at home such as cooking together, watching sunsets and chats.
I am really excited to move to my dream place and hope to hear back from you soon.
Thank you
Navneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the house (apartment) is described adequately, detailing its rooms and the balcony view. Second, the writer explains how time is being spent by mentioning a summer job and daily routine. Third, a clear invitation is extended to the friend to come and stay. While the prompt mentions a 'house by a lake', the student has set the scene in a Toronto apartment, which is a slight deviation from the prompt's exact scenario, but it is handled naturally as a creative adaptation for a general task. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. Overall, all parts of the prompt are covered well, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with clear progression from a friendly greeting, to describing the apartment, explaining the summer job, and finally issuing the invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs for each main idea. Cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'The most fascinating thing', and 'After my shift' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Referencing is clear throughout the response, ensuring the relationships between ideas are easy to follow. The letter flows smoothly from start to finish without noticeable disruptions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a general letter. Phrases such as 'good spirits', 'exceptionally beautiful balcony', and 'scenic view' show a positive control of descriptive language. There are some less common items used with some awareness of style, such as 'equipped with all appliances' and 'fascinating thing'. Word choice is generally accurate, though there are minor unnatural collocations like 'downtown of Toronto' instead of simply 'downtown Toronto'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient for flexibility and precision, supporting clear communication without impeding the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('where I am staying this summer', 'that it has an exceptionally beautiful balcony') and conditional/temporal clauses ('After my shift, I am planning...'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. There are only very minor issues, such as 'where I would be able to see scenic view' missing an article before 'scenic view'. The majority of sentences are grammatically sound and error-free, demonstrating a solid grasp of English grammar suitable for this task level.
