Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam,
I hope you and your family are doing well. I am very excited to tell you that I rented beautiful house near to huronia lake for the entire summer. The house is just across the lake and kayak station. It has wonderful garden and patio area to enjoy hot days with the view. In addition, house has very interesting balcony from where you can enjoy sunrise without going on hills.
I am thinking to stay there for the entire summer season as I am working online with my company. I can work in weekdays with the fantastic view and go for hiking and trails in weekend. There are numerous hiking options and many trails around the water which has beautiful path in between.
I will be very happy if you could come to my rental house and spend some days. Summer vacation is going to start from the next month. You can come with your family so kids can also enjoy the water and we all can do water activities.
I will look forward to hear from you. Give my big hug to your kids.
See you soon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt in a natural and friendly tone appropriate for a letter to a friend. First, you vividly describe the house and its surroundings, mentioning features like the 'wonderful garden and patio area' and the 'interesting balcony'. Second, you explain how you are spending your time by sharing your remote work arrangement and weekend hiking plans. Finally, you issue a warm and clear invitation for your friend and their family to visit next month. The purpose of the letter is entirely clear from the outset, and all required information is fully and appropriately developed. The tone is consistently informal and polite, fitting the General Training task requirements seamlessly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical overall progression from a polite opening and description of the house to your daily activities and finally the invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea grouped into its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'First', and referencing pronouns ('The house', 'It', 'There') are handled well to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Although some of the transitions are slightly straightforward rather than sophisticated, the organization is entirely cohesive and natural for personal correspondence, fulfilling all expectations for this band level without any disruption to the reading flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary that successfully conveys your message, using descriptive terms like 'wonderful garden', 'patio area', and 'hiking options'. There are a few minor lexical slips and unnatural collocations, such as 'rented beautiful house' missing an article ('a beautiful house'), 'near to huronia lake' instead of 'near Lake Huronia', and 'on hills' instead of 'in the hills'. Additionally, writing 'in weekdays' rather than 'on weekdays' is a minor preposition error. Despite these occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, the vocabulary is more than sufficient to communicate all intended ideas clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am thinking to stay there for the entire summer season as I am working online with my company.' You demonstrate good control over most basic structures, and your verb tenses are generally handled well across present and future time frames. However, there are some noticeable grammatical inaccuracies, particularly missing articles ('rented beautiful house', 'in addition, house has') and incorrect prepositions ('near to', 'in weekdays'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur with enough frequency to prevent the grammar score from reaching the higher band levels where error-free sentences predominate.
